Be still and know that I am God. - Psalm 46:10
Why Fast from Digital Media?
A Message from Pastor Joe
Dear Church Family,
As we begin this new year, I'm struck by a sobering reality: Americans now spend over 4 hours and 25 minutes daily on their phones—a dramatic increase from just 2 hours and 54 minutes in 2022. That's nearly 68 full days a year spent on our devices.
I'm excited to journey with you through this 21-day digital fast as we reclaim this time for what truly matters. To support you, we've created a WhatsApp group led by Pastor Vynnie and a special Bible study bookmark to guide your daily readings.
Remember, you're not alone in this challenge. Join our prayer times, connect with the WhatsApp group, and use the study guide to stay focused. Together, we can listen to God's voice in our increasingly connected world.
In Christ,
Pastor Joe
Why Participate in the Digital Fast?
Just as Jesus taught about fasting as a spiritual discipline (Matthew 6:16-18), this digital fast can help deepen your connection with God while reducing daily stress and anxiety. Following Daniel's example of staying pure (Daniel 1:8-15), you'll find renewed focus and productivity as you strengthen relationships with family and friends. Remember Isaiah 58:6, which speaks of fasting as a way to break chains and find freedom – in our digital age. This freedom comes through intentionally disconnecting to reconnect with what matters most.
Modified Version: Taking First Steps
If you need a more gradual approach, consider this modified fast: Choose ONE streaming service and limit viewing to 30 minutes daily, watching only with family or friends. Check social media once daily on your computer (15-minute limit), and delete social apps from your phone. Keep screens away during meals, power down all devices one hour before bed, and practice a complete digital fast on Sundays. Remember, this modified version is a stepping stone – you can always increase your commitment as you grow more comfortable with digital boundaries.
Setting Up Your Phone for Success
Setting Up Your Phone for Success
Keep only the essentials that help you navigate daily life. Maintain your phone's basic functions: calling, texting, calendar, camera, weather, GPS, and music for work or exercise.
Remove all that pulls at your attention. Uninstall social media apps (Instagram, TikTok, Snapchat), games, shopping apps, and news applications. It might feel challenging at first, but simpler phone, screen, and TV usage often leads to a more focused life.
